For ten years, day in and day out, she has shouldered the heavy burden of caring for her elderly mother-in-law, who suffers from dementia and is unable to care for herself. Over those ten years—3,650 days and nights, through scorching summers and bitter winters—she has never missed a single moment, attending to her needs with unwavering devotion. She says that whenever she does these things, her mother-in-law’s tears fall silently. She knows those are tears of happiness and gratitude. Through those glistening tears, she seems to see the same spark of emotion in her own mother’s eyes when she used to wash her grandmother’s feet. She adds: “Though she isn’t my birth mother, I feel it is my duty to take good care of her, because I love my husband and I love this family.”

What is home? Home is a haven, a resting place. Yet in reality, there was an infant who, at just five months old, lost the warmth of a family. It was she—our moral role model—who, without hesitation, took on the heavy responsibility of raising her five-month-old nephew. To this day, she cannot forget that face, crying out for nourishment, and those frightened, helpless eyes from nineteen years ago. The moment she held the child in her arms, tears streaming down her cheeks, she vowed to herself: no matter how arduous the road ahead or how humble her life might be, she would treat the child as her own and give him the best childhood possible.
